Práctica 1 - Fecha de entrega: 15 de marzo de 2007.
  1. Either try to install Dialang into your computer, or locate a ready-to-use English test. Try to complete it, and then state what your language level is.
  2. Find at least two on-line dictionaries (either English-English or English-Spanish). If possible, try to select only nautical/maritime dictionaries.

  3. Start a bilingual nautical vocabulary with the help of a Spread-sheet programme. Every-week you should add some 30-50 new entries. Decide what fields you would like to include on every entry.

  4. Watch & Listen to the following YouTube videos, and then answer the questions below:

    1. Radio communication aboard the USS Montana

      1. Is there any problem at all?

      2. Are the Radio-Operators using adequately the transmission procedures?

      3. What kind of vessel is the USS Montana? Does that explain their mistake?

    2. Sporty's GPS Approaches

      1. What is the gist of this video clip?

      2. Name at least two of the main topics delivered.

    3. FLIP marine research vessel

      1. What’s so important about the FLIP marine research vessel?

      2. What does FLIP stand for?

      3. What are the main ideas presented in this clip?

    4. Provide at least two other YouTube or DailyMotion links to other maritime-related video-clips.

  5. Go to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution games section, and try to build a lifeboat, following the instructions provided.

  6. Go to Mississippi Boating License and Boat Safety Course - Boating Safety Course, and try to complete the animation about the different parts of a boat.

  7. Go to Mississippi Boating License and Boat Safety Course - ColReg, and try to follow the Collision Regulations with the help of the animations.

  2. Watch & Listen to the following YouTube videos, and then answer the questions below:

    1. Queen Mary 2 [QMII] Filmed by Todd & Sydney Harbour Pilots

      1. Describe the general scene in a maximum of four lines (around 60 words)

      2. Does the pilot ever go aboard QMII?

      3. Do you spot any other strange scenes?

    2. The Queen Mary 2 arrives in Sydney

      1. Why is Queen Elizabeth 2 (QEII) mentioned in the video?

      2. In order to give an idea of the size of QMII, what comparisons are made?

      3. State any other ideas you might think of interest

    3. Van Oord flexible fall pipe vessels

      1. What’s the video main topic?

      2. What kind of vessel is involved?

      3. Say, at least, four nautical terms mentioned in the video-clip, with their Spanish equivalents.

      4. Imagine you work for one of Van Oord flexible fall pipe vessels. Create a five line story (around 75 words) about a day on board such a vessel.

    4. Provide at least two other YouTube or DailyMotion links to other maritime-related video-clips.

  3. Locate at least three free on-line sites related to the Q-codes and transmission protocoles. Provide link.

  4. Locate at least two sites on tide & weather prediction. Provide link.

  5. What is the broadcast format of the BBC Shipping Forecast Bulletin? How is the sea divided? Name main areas between the Canary Isles and Norway (including the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean). Is there any place for misunderstandings (for instance, two areas with the same name, an area with two different names)?

  2. Watch & Listen to the following YouTube videos, and then answer the questions below:

      1. What's the gist of the video?

      2. What language do you think they are speaking? Could it be Maritime English? If you think it is not English, what language do you think it might be?

    2. Antwerp Ship Disaster

      1. What does "ship capsize mean"?

      2. As this video clip has very little comments, what can you say about the general background? (Describe it in 5-6 lines).

    3. Provide at least two other YouTube or DailyMotion links to other maritime-related video-clips.

  3. Browse the "Como pescar un avión" blog-entry. Believe it or not, it did happen near Tenerife, many years ago. Try to render into English a small summary of the whole story.

  4. Check with the Internet what the Beaufort and Douglas scales are and provide, at least, two links with definitions. One of them should be in English, the other in Spanish.

  5. Compare the shipping broadcast for today as delivered by the British MetOffice and the Spanish Instituto Nacional de Meteorología. Then, give a Spanish version of the English text (provide link) and an English version of the Spanish Text (provide link).

  6. Go to the Marine Forecast Areas (Navtex Areas) and try to define what a marine forecast area is. State how many areas are there, and what areas have changed their names in the European coasts (State old and new names).

  7. What does UTC stand for? Is there any difference with GMT? Provide links.

    1. Why is there no "natural" zero meridian?

    2. What's the usual measure for a degree of longitude?

    3. Why do we exchange a time signal? How did it all begin? Why?

    4. What incident led to the quest for an accurate method to find out longitude?

  4. According to The Ship Captain's Medical Guide, what steps are to be followed if we have any casualties on-board?

  5. Provide appropriate links for human body main parts, including internal organs and skeleton bones.

    1. Why are two (red and green) spheroids included?

    2. What caused some magnetic disturbances in early binnacles?

    3. Is the word "binnacle" related to the concept of "log" in any way? Explain why.

    4. What is a "Log Book"?

  4. Read the Anchor windlass overhaul report.  Then answer the following questions.

    1. What does windlass overhaul mean? (You may have to refer to a bilingual/monolingual encyclopaedia).

    2. What are the "islands’ lee sides"?

    3. What are the steps to be taken to heave up the anchor?

    4. What are the "shoes"?

  4. After reading the following Wikipedia's entry on Morse code, decide:

    1. Why it is discontinued by most institutions, since 1999.

    2. What system has replaced Morse communications among ships.

    3. Why is Morse code considered to be easily understood by humans without any computer aids?

    4. Has it ever been used as an alternative medical therapy?

  1. Your bilingual nautical vocabulary should be enlarged by 30-50 new entries. Decide what fields you would like to include on every entry.

  2. Watch & Listen to the following YouTube videos, and then answer the questions below:

      1. Where does the joke lie? Is there any pun (play-on-words)?

      2. Do you consider both parties have kept the distress protocole? If so, why?

    2. Do you speak English?

      1. What seems to be the tourist problem? What does she need? What languages does she speak?

      2. The two boys are teasing her, but in what ways? What's their final wish? What's the advise they offer the tourist?

  3. For your future reference, you might need to know how to read and/or interpret (in English) block and schematic diagrams. Look for at least one web-site where you may check on how to read electronic symbols and mathematical formulae. Provide the link.

  4. Wikipedia's entries on Engrish and English As She Is Spoke (first published in 1855) show the fact that broken English is not a new phenomenon. After reading both articles, please:

    1. Outline main points of every entry.

    2. In no more than 5 lines (50-60 words), tell the pros and cons of using an automatic translator such as  Babel Fish [Babelfish Translation Service - Altavista]

      1. What seems to be the problem? Where does the joke lie? Is there any pun (play-on-words)?

      2. Do you consider both parties are using the same language? If not, say why.

    2. Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel Video

      1. What class, and how many Royal Navy vessels patrol the South Atlantic?

      2. What are the Royal Navy Offshore Patrol vessel main duties? Do they perform any other, secondary duties?

      3. How are the waters they patrol considered? How do they rate such a task?

      4. In what context is the following excerp pronounced: "... for a Nato mine warfare flotilla"? What is the final caption-sentence?

  3. In your future work, you may need to write detailed instructions on how to repair or fit a given device. Write down a ten-step instruction-sheet on how to use the radiotelephone aboard.

  4. In your future work, you may be expected to properly use, or even improve, your maritime English knowledge. One way to do it, is by using the MarEng learning tool. You may download it (free of charge) from here.
